Fresno, Fresno County
Baldassare Forestiere, an immigrant from Sicily, spent about forty years digging rooms, courtyards and passages by hand beneath the hardpan soil of Fresno. He planted citrus trees and grapevines that grow up through skylights toward the sun. His underground home stays cool through the valley summer, and guided tours still walk visitors through it.
